Grant Recipient 2011
Kids 'n Kamp
"A Lifeline of Support for Families
Touched by Childhood Cancer"
TCCMV Foundation awarded a 2011 grant to Kids 'n Kamp, a local Columbus nonprofit organization, that began simply as a camp weekend for families. The organization has grown to become a full-service support center for children diagnosed and their entire families. Kids 'n Kamp offers five yearly family activities as well as monthly and weekend events. This organization also offers tutoring, counseling, and an emergency financial assistance fund to over 450 families once this diagnosis has affected other parts of their lives. The counseling service is provided, free of charge, to any family member of the childhood cancer family--patient, sibling, parent, or the whole family unit. The counseling is provided to individuals or families in need by licensed professionals. Kids 'n Kamp offers the counseling at no charge for as long as the service is needed.
In the words of one of the licensed professional counselors,
". . . it is clear to me that the impact of pediatric cancer is as devastating as anything I have seen." And another counselor reported, "It is a joy to have a youth or parent report that home and school behaviors have improved, that anger has been managed well and that the family is doing well. We have been able to meet very clear goals in all of these areas . . ."
Kids 'n Kamp is supported through grants and fundraisers. Kids 'n Kamp used the TCCMVF grant dollars to lessen its financial burden and allow the organization to continue offering the counseling services to children and adults who are in search of coping skills when told of the diagnosis of cancer.
